[Leartes&Dekogon Challenge] 1950 post apocalyptic scene FINISHED

Hey,

Going to participate in the Leartes&Dekogon challenge. Taking some inspiration from Eddie Mendoza and blending it with some slight retro future but also giving it some personal story elements.

The setting is early 1950s and the war ended at the end of 1940s but the way it ended also triggered the end of the world. More on that later.

Edit: Adding a bit more to the story as i go along with this project:
This is an alternate history type of thing where the main differences are that the URSS joined the Axis at the middle of the 1940s and the war continued till 49. UK and Germany are on their last legs and the war is fought mostly between US and URSS. War ends with the russians bombing the US - as a retaliation to the bombing of Japan one year earlier - and by doing so started nuclear holocaust.
Its 1951 and the average temperature has dropped 4 degrees. A permanent and thick layer of clouds has covered almost the entire planet. The air is unbreathable, rain is acid and whatever is left of the population is either underground, in the mountains or - for the wealthy - in a blimp.

Hey peeps,

Progress has been slow but steady

Made the first texture atlas that is mapped onto one of the buildings. Still wip and more of a proof of concept

Here it is on one of the main buildings.

Hope to get more traction next week...

Small update of nearly every single thing. Trying to get a good monorail support thing to go well with the buildings.

Done since last update:

- more work on the first car model, almost done with it since i'm pretty happy of how it turned out.

- worked some more on the second car model - not 100% sold on the proportions and some of the details

- rescaled the monorail structure a bit - still needs work

- worked on one of the main buildings a bit - i'll add more detail as i go along:

- tried to integrate some statues here and there but couldnt find anything that suits the scene:

What i need to do next:

- finalize the second car model design

- UV the last 2 main buildings upper parts

- start working on archways and other pieces that integrate the monorail and the high speed train with the buildnings

- detail and UV the pedestrian bridge

- finalise the lower part of the main buildings

Forgot about some older updates:

2nd car - testing door sills

Next is bringing all the lower parts of the buildings to a "almost final" state.

thinking of baking some object space textures like AO and blending them with level space AO and triplanar noise in order to produce masks for dirt, grime, leakages and whatnot. this is only for lower part of the buildings and medium sized props.

customization was kept in mind during the design and development of this model. more customization to come

The door sills and some body parts transitions are made with floating geo

This way i can model faster and make the body part interchangeable from one car to the other.

Really seems like that clean uniform topology is making those sexy reflection bands...simply glide across the surface.

Not a lot of time left for this challenge so updates are short and far apart

Just wanted to give an update on this. The competition submission date has passed and i was able to bring the project into a "finalized" state just in time. Some things are not quite to my liking but im calling it done for now. Maybe ill get back to it some day but for now this is it.

From lego construction kit to something rather impressive .I know is environment piece and it should stay in the back but I wish there are more hints of color and stronger lighting especially in close ups , like if there is a seed of hope also to help with point of interest .Its look very dead without anything organic not even a dog or homeless guy , flickering street light wind playing the garbage  .Garbage density is way too high and graffiti are totally unrealistic giants must of drawn them .Ok you have an environment now to the story and  game play If you even revisit this project I think film noir lighting will suit it very well if you ever watched Dark city that kind of vibe

@carvuliero thanks for the feedback.
I did intend for it to be dark and depressing but i think it is missing something to really "sell" that feeling. Maybe i did not fully commit to the idea and that comes through somehow.
I agree, did get carried away with the garbage
The grafitti is supposed to be painted messages by the survivors in order to convey some story elements.
Neon lights were one of the things that got scrapped due to lack of time. One of the lessons learned on this project is that if you dont know how much available time you have maybe dont try to do everything.
