I've been away from the Max scene for a long time. Any noteworthy takeaway points from the MAX viewport framework talk? Looks to me like they are just trying to catch up to other PBR viewports from competing DCC apps, but I could be wrong. I would be interested in knowing if they are promising to do things no one else is doing at the moment.
"One viewport to rule them all'. I'm sorry but that just sounds like something that's going to turn out incredibly bloated if it has to plug into multiple of Autodesk's applications. Never allowed to be tailored to the needs of one kind of application and all.
Max has a pretty rough looking but rather fast viewport at the moment, doesn't it? This sounds like it has the potential to change all of that.
The viewport now called OGS is the same in all Autodesk Apps. Its a framework and every tools takes what it needs. As we can see right now Maya does not have the "exact" same viewport as MAX but both are based on the OGS framework.
They make the viewport just ready for DX12 and Vulcan with USD and MaterialX in mind. Plus a Hydra delegate. Just watch the video.
And like in the past all are doing what Disney demands on Disney papers.
3dsMax viewport has been capable of PBR since ages. it just that the workflow needed some clicks. Now it is streamlined.
As oglu mentioned, OGS already has been the backbone of all Autodesk product. Nitrous is the exactly tailored to the needs of one kind of application version if OGS.

Most interesting for me the Maya Rigging Talk and the new MAX Viewport Tech Talk.
And those new Bifrost stuff is beyond expectations.
There is a second chance to watch the Bifrost Talk. It starts in 3h from now.
