SENIOR ENVIRONMENT ARTIST


First Contact is seeking a well-rounded Senior Environment Artist to help create some of the best games you can play today in VR.  This artist is comfortable working on a very small team with a large amount of responsibility, is technically inclined, and has experience dealing with outsourcing.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Completely own and assemble modular playspaces, using Maya and Unreal Engine to create realistic, incredible environment art that pushes the boundaries of VR

  • In depth understanding of how to leverage the outsourcing process and are comfortable dealing with external resources directly

  • Create tiling and unique PBR Materials, modular and unique level models, props― whatever the level needs!

  • Optimize and bug fix levels and playspaces through vert count reduction/LOD creation, shader cost reduction, etc.


REQUIREMENTS

  • An amazing portfolio demonstrating up-to-date 3D art techniques, including high poly/low poly baking, organic and hard surface modeling, and PBR shader knowledge

  • Working knowledge of Maya, Substance Designer, Substance Painter, Zbrush, Photoshop, and other industry standard software

  • Strong sensibilities regarding modular environment creation in addition to prop creation

  • Team player with strong adaptability to changing production demands as well as ability to communicate clearly

  • Able to consistently meet deadlines

  • Must be currently eligible to work in the USA

  • An interest in VR!

DESIRED SKILLS

  • 4+ years of previous game studio experience with at least 1 shipped title

  • VR Game Experience

  • Unreal 4 Experience

  • Experience with version control software (Perforce or equivalent)

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent

SENIOR LIGHTING ARTIST


First Contact is seeking a Sr. Lighting Artist to help us create high-end, immersive, next generation VR games.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lights all aspects of game, marketing material, cinematics, etc.

  • Works closely with Art Director to help determine lighting style of project

  • Works closely with the artists and designers to make sure assets are properly set up for lighting and the correct areas are emphasized for gameplay

  • Works closely with the Tech department to prototype and test new technology

  • Proposes new ideas and methods to improve workflow, performance, and technology in game

  • Creates and implements skies and atmospheres

  • Manages post processing

  • Sets up and optimizes reflection environments

  • Sets up scene lights to match color keys and concept art

  • Help other departments with atmospherics and lighting setups for their environment or test level needs

  • Stays informed about new developments in rendering, particularly with regard to realistic lighting and surfaces

  • Troubleshoots large scene files and rendering errors

  • Other duties may be assigned

REQUIREMENTS

  • At least 3 years in game production as a real time lighter

  • Must be very proactive and willing to learn on the job

  • Must be able to take constructive criticism well

DESIRED SKILLS

  • Should possess an extensive knowledge of realtime lighting

  • Understanding of UE4 material editor and how it can be used to create materials for lighting (or ability and willingness to learn)

  • Understanding of UE4 construction scripts and how it can be used to create lighting actors and tools within UE4 (or ability and willingness to learn)

  • Superior understanding of real-time lighting and lighting performance

  • Have the ability to work on multiple projects at once as a shared resource between projects and to work independently to maintain consistent aesthetic and technical quality in all lighting

  • Strong artistic foundational skills (form, value, color, etc)

  • Knowledge of physical lighting models and methods

  • Strong understanding of the impact light has on gameplay

  • Good understanding of pbr materials and how to make the most of them with lighting

RIGGING/PIPELINE TECH ARTIST


First Contact is seeking a Rigging/Pipeline Tech Artist to help take our Characters, Weapons, and Animation Pipeline to the next level.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Collaborate with our art and animation departments to create rigs using our Maya-based, scripted rig build system

  • Collaborate with our animation department to write tools that improve our control rigs, and animation pipeline

  • Collaborate with other Tech Artists and Departments to push the studio pipeline forward

  • Push the limits of what is possible in VR

REQUIREMENTS

  • Must have a demo reel demonstrating tools, rigging, user interface design, and technical ability with a provided breakdown of your contributions to what we see on the demo reel

  • 4+ years experience in games or related field

  • Expert knowledge of Maya tools and architecture

  • Working experience with Unreal Engine

  • Must be proficient with Python scripting in Maya, with expert knowledge of the API and object model Maya exposes for scripting

  • Solid math skills, with a good understanding of how matrices and vectors work

  • Comfortable wearing multiple hats and problem solving both in DCC and in Unreal Engine

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the US. All work will take place at our Santa Monica headquarters

  • Ability to self manage tasks as well as communicate effectively with multiple departments in an ongoing fashion

DESIRED SKILLS

  • Good aesthetic eye for rigging bipeds and realistic weapons

  • C++ programming experience

  • Experience with simulated setups like cloth, hair, and muscle deformation
