Intro

[ from readme text ] :

"...thanks for DL Prettything, She is a model i did for myself to use in Q2 but there is no use in just me having her is there..:) So enjoy"

The cute little anime girl that's been sitting in the previews section so long has finally arrived. An excellent attempt by the awesome author of Dire Avenger and Sorbogon, that should rock the Quake 2 modeling community with it's amazingly realistic innovations.

The Model

740 faces, quite a bit. But still well under the standard 800 set. All the polys were used very wisely, the only thing I can tell that she could have done without is that one piece of hair that sticks up in the front, but it does add to the overall anime-ism of the character. Also note that the model has separate eyelids and teeth.

The model is not based on any existing character so there's not much to compare it to, other than the fact it reminds me a lot of the CG meets Anime style of such games as Tekken. If that's the look the author was going for, then he nailed it.

The model stands a bit below the height of the male models head, but this shouldn't pose a huge problem. Unless you're playing a mod with head shots coded in there's really no reason for you to aim up there anyway.

Score: Ten

The Animations

Wow! this is where this baby shines. Amazingly smooth, in character, anime style movements. From the 'strike a pose' taunt, to what my girlfriend refers to as 'the booty dance' taunt. All perfect in form. The secondary movement of the hair is excellent, and there's more.... there's actually secondary movement of the eyelids and mouth. This girl does it all, from blinking to making mean faces, to actually appearing to be in pain in the death and pain sequences. Truly awe-inspiring.

The only flaw that is noticeable is in frame 197, the last death frame. Her head and arms are still in the air, not rested on the ground. and the feet poke through the leg guards. Not a big deal, however it will be very noticeable on dead bodies in DM. But it's such a minor thing on an otherwise perfectly professional model it's only gonna cost half a star, and won't affect my final score of the model.

Score: Nine

The Skin

The Mapping: 32% in the tris.md2, again pushing the limit, but still under. Very good mapping, when I received the preview of this model I immediately did a skin for it, so I know the layout well. Contrary to the report on the mini-review page posted at it's release. The four limbs (arms and legs) are not mapped in the same spot. However, the front and back of the lower body are mapped on top of each other, with a bit of compensation to keep her front from looking like it has a buttcrack. Pretty much everything else is overlapped for maximum efficiency, the teeth, the arms, the hair,..all of it. Well thought mapping at it's best.

The weapon is a bit of a monster on the space wastage front though. At 50% it exceeds the limit by far. Otherwise it is well laid out.

The Skin: Perfect anime styling. Excellent shading and GL blending techniques. The actual design of the outfit is made to work with the overlapped mapping. I learned quickly in skinning Pretty that if you try to leave the bounds of the original outfit much, the outcome can be quite chaotic. Which is not a bad this on the author's part the same thing is true of Id's quake 2 models.

Excellent job. The skins are perfect but we must take a half star for the massive wastage in the weapon.md2. But with the scores tallied up and divided by the sections, rounding up, that still makes this a 5 star attempt. Something that takes Player Plugin Modelling to a higher level such as this, deserves no less.
