Intro

Well, I noticed this one's been sitting in the "not-reviewed" section for.. what, 5-6 months now? So, for my first review I decided to take some sympathy and review this poor soul. ;-) This is really a good model, actually. Not bad for the author's 2nd work! Based on the character from the Tekken series, this model shines, really. Of COURSE this model, like every model there is, has it's share of faults. But it is, all in all a good model. "Took me over 3 weeks on and off to model, skin and animate! Shit that is alot of work"

Read on...

The Model

Ahh, the fun of subjectivity. (Inside joke for R-13 ;-P) Paul is a good model based on an awesome character, and portrays him very well. Now, the nitty-gritty. This model, unlike many models, is NOT a poly hog. Hell, at 669 polys for this decent a model, I'm kind of surprised. Anyway. First, for the bounding box. His head sticks WAY out of the bounding box. Meaning you can't pop him in the face with a rail, which is the whole point of Q2 play ;-) If you see the height comparison pic up there, you know what I mean. I could've dealt with this if it was just his hair (who kills people's hair anyway?), but since it is the head, I think I may have to dock a point for that. I can't notice any spitting anywhere, and that is good. The model is constructed quite solidly, but the hair is unbelievably boxy. It looks pretty goofy, and with the low poly count he probably could of spared a couple to spruce it up. I'll go with 3 and a half stars.

Score: Seven

The Animations

The animations are one of the best parts of the model, really. The stand animation isn't too fidgety, but it has that "where's-something-whose-ass-I-can-kick", which I love. The run anim is very nice also, and the model looks really in-place running around. The attack anim is great, featuring Paul doing a punch-punch-kick combo. I'm really glad he decided not to go with a gun, even though it looks seriously goofy. But it's a good goofy, so no points off. The pain anims are also pretty nice, but lack imagination. Just your standard jerking-around, too bad, because you see those anims a lot (if you're good anyway ;-P). Next, is the jump anim. A lot can and could be done with these 5 frames, and a lot wasn't. He doesn't really seem to jump, just kinda hop. I know that doesn't matter much at all, but it really looks too stupid to let pass. Really folks. Anyway, I _LOVE_ what he did with the flip anim. He should of used the flip anim for the jump. For the flip anim he does a somersault on the ground. It looks terrific, and really is crazy to see in game, just to see your opponent somersault, it's quite disorienting ;-) The salute and point are pretty standard, but the taunt has Paul cracking his knuckles and moving his head around, also lending to the "I'm about to kick your ass and sleep with your wife" attitude, and I think that's a great thing in the Q2 universe. Although, for the crouching anims, he actually ends up being about as tall as the Q2 male model standing straight, and that can be a REALLY bad thing. The death anims are nicely done, they leave him getting tossed around, obviously in a world of pain ;-) I'll have to go with four stars here.

Score: Eight

The Skin

The skin is one of the more in-between areas of the model. There is only ONE skin, which is not too good a thing, but that skin is nicely done. Drawing in at 28% wasted space, not TOO bad. But, his face looks REALLY stupid, he looks like he has a mental disability, which takes badly away from the ruff-n-tuff look and atmosphere this guy makes. The mapping isn't too bad. I skin models out of boredom sometimes, so I just might do a skin for this guy, but that's 100% irrelevant ;-) There's only one skin, which will knock off a point and a half, as that's really too much of a fault. And the weapon model's skin causes "NULL skin found" errors, so that deserves a minus of a point. I will personally fix that and add a sound pack, and get back to you later ;-) So after deduction for the skins, I'll go with 3 and a half.

Score: Seven

Sounds

This model includes no sounds, but I think a decent one could be pieced together from some of the Q2 tough monsters, it'd take a short amount of time, really. Hey, I just may do that...

Visible Weapons Support

There isn't any, and I don't think there ever will be, but one thing that would just rule too much is different kind of brass knuckles ;-) That would be cool.

Pack Inclusion

This model is totally border-line. The model is very good, and I like the character. Border-line or not, it is so in. Expect it in the next pack!
