Intro
(In evil tones) Good evening! I've always wanted to do that... :)
Well, what do we have here? It's the cobra model, made by Neil Weber "Dufusyte"! Yahoo!! ...Ok, I've calmed down, Let's move on... here's a brief description of the model:
"A cobra with bonus lower fangs! Stroggos is infested with snakes; some have fallen into the bio-vats and come out breathing rockets, coughing up grenades, and spitting buck-shot. These creatures die with a shriek and leave a mere snake skin behind. When wounded, they can sometimes grow their head back."
He also mentions that it's his first model, so I'll grade it easier than I normally would. Slightly easier. :)
The Model
Yep... uh-huh... okay, I think I got it...
The model is, well, great for a first-timer model... Certainly something better than what I can make as of right now, but we won't go into that. I don't see any wasted polys or anything else wrong with the mesh, although in my opinion the back of its head seems too flat, but the author may have done that intentionally. Maybe that's how they can spit rockets out, I don't know... Overall, measuring in at 637 polygons, the author may be on to something here.
Score: Nine
The Animations
Beam me up, Scotty, there seems to be no intelligent life here... Sorry, random outburst, just thought it would keep you reading. :)
Ok, my review this time won't be so extensive, that way you won't fall asleep in the middle of it... Admittingly, I aciddentaly did that once and fell asleep on the keyboard, causing a repeating "a" in it. The stand animation is pretty nice for a first timer, but there's too much movement going on at once. It stretches up, it shrinks down, and does it a second time as it looks around. The run animation is full of movement also, but it is more reasonable. It's mouth also grows as it fires. Yeah, I know that a snake can dislocate its jaw, but not in this manner. The pain animations are okay, too, but the snake seems to fly back in one scene, then "floats" back to starting position. Jumping, luckily for him, is what you would expect a snake to do when jumping. Of course, luckily, this will only happen in real life when pigs fly... :)
The taunt animations... well, they were disappointing. At least he moves, though, when he's taunting... I've seen some that just stand still while they do their taunts. *cough*bomberman*cough* The only real noticable one in this case would be the flipoff, where his tongue stretches, flips up and goes back to normal position. Salute... stand up, shrink down a little, stretch up a little. taunt, his upper fangs stretch down and shrink, then the lower fangs follow the same routine. The wave, he just flaps the back part of the body near the head (I don't remember what it's called, so shoot me!! Ok, nevermind... :) back and forth. And then the point... well, he points with his tail.
The crouch sequences seem to be almost the same with the normal stance and run animations, only the front of the body shrunk. And the death animations weren't to impressive either, how the snake falls to the side and "deflates," or leaves a snake skin on the ground, like what the author said. Except for the last one, where it flips over, lands, and the fangs stretch out into the air. Maybe hoping someone will kill themself by falling onto the fangs, who knows?
Score: Six
The Skin
The skins, what lacks in detail, makes up for in number. The skins would do nicely in OpenGL (Which I have now, yeah!!) but seem somewhat "dirty" in software mode. The only one I would consider good would be the moccasin skin, which it's too dark to see any sort of detail in the rest of the body (i.e. not in head and front of upper body.) Camper skin? Who knows... (Off topic... A camper in-game I see is as good as dead!) And a different skin, which is just edited to fit the snake, that looks like one of the female skins. However, he did mention this skin being there, so I won't dock him for that.
Score: Six
Sounds
Sorry, Defusyte, edited or not, these sounds still don't impress me. No offense, but I could make better shrieks of pain than the snake can. Sure, some of them were edited, but some of them sounded like someone breathed hard into a microphone. (Can you tell I'm not impressed yet? :) some of the sounds don't even go well with the snake. I'm pretty sure you could do a lot better than this...
Score: Five
Visible Weapons Support
There is no, and probably won't be any, visible weapon support for this model. Now if someone could make some VWEPS that hung out of the mouth... THAT would be interesting to see!
Recommendation
My recommendation? No. Not unless you want pouncing snakes the size of humans on your hard drive. But what you choose is not my choice. Go ahead and download it if you want. Sorry, Defusyte, but this isn't one I would keep on my computer. But maybe if you work at it, you'll get better... maybe... :)
