Intro

Ah, what do we have here? Another model? Oh well, can't expect much more with model reviews... :) anyway, this is Citrus Frog's model, uhh... of Citrus Frog. And no, this is not the real author! Here's a part of the readme file I pulled off:

Here it is then... my namesake, the 12-toed wonder that is - The Citrus Frog!

More a thing of legend than of fear and respect, It's said that a soltry amphibian is known to stalk the textured floors and walls of a .bsp universe. He be not one of those big scaly things with all the teeth, no, he is a small frog with a slight yellow tinge to him. Some call him 12-Toes, but to others, who know his name, he's just Citrus Frog.

Oh, THAT'S original... Just kidding, Citrus. Although, climbing on walls as a frog with a gun sounds like an idea for an interesting mod... ;) But hey, let's see if this model makes the cut for DM, shall we?.

The Model

Well, the best thing I can say about this is that it is one of the most low-poly meshes I have ever seen. 351 polys, to be exact. One of the better models for older computers. I checked it over twice and found no wasted polygons. On this sort of model, though, it really wouldn't hurt gameplay if there happened to be a few polys inside the mesh, although it would degrade the model's quality. But no degrading here! There are actually polygons inside the mesh, but this was done on purpose as the frog's tongue reveals itself in a few animations. However, there is one thing that bugs me. The legs in many animations seem as thin as a piece of paper. But in others, the legs get added thickness in them. Some parts of the model's mesh are okay, but the legs just yell out, "NOT!" Fortunately overall quality is good for the most part..

Score: Nine

The Animations

Hmm... I don't know what to say. Better leave it at that before I start saying things... That explains a lot, doesn't it? :) Well, I watched the model many times and came up with this:

The crouch-stance animations, as I have seen while reviewing, are the same as the stance animations. There should be some sign that the player is crouching, like the front end of the body getting closer to the ground. The only way you can tell if it's crouching or not is by the run and crouch-walk sequence. The run sequence shows him hopping while the crouch-walk shows him just walking on the ground. Plus, the fire animations are also the same, minus the last frame on the crouch fire... and the first pain and crouch-pain sequences are the same. I wonder why? :)

The waves are, well, interesting. The flipoff sequence shows the frog doing some sort of V-sign with the front left toes. The salute shows him raising his head up into the air then doing some "wave" motion with his tongue. Now I wasn't expecting that when I first saw it. Luckily I wasn't playing a game when it happened... :) Like I said, they were interesting. The taunt, though, didn't spark my interest at all... Just some animation like, "Hey look! I'm carrying a freakin'-huge gun and standing on one foot!" :) The wave animation, though, was more expected than the salute, where he sticks his tongue out and waves it in front of him, then pulls it back in, and the point, now getting used to seeing the tongue, didn't surprise me at all when he stuck his tongue out to point forward.

Now the death animations weren't too impressive, because three of them looked more like the frog's feet got knocked out from below him, and the last one the frog just rolls over onto its back and dies. All in all, I'd say this part of the model wasn't very impressive. There's just not enough movement in all of this.

The Skin

Well, it certainly is brightly colored! The brighter areas usually show up around the main part of the body, but if there is shadowing on the body, I certainly don't see it! Seems more like colors thrown in a blender and pouring it on some frog pixilated-style. Well, except for the multi-colored skin... Well, at least there are many color variations... there are 11 skins, including CTF, so color wise you won't be disappointed. The skin wastage is average, 36% to be exact. The skins, luckily, are 256x256, so it gets a point there. But the skins aren't detailed at all... so they're below average. Colors are down, skin size is right, but no detail whatsoever.

Score: Six

Sounds

There are no sounds included with the model.

Visible Weapons Support

The model uses standard ID Vwep support.

Quality Standard/Recommendation

The model, though cute in its own way, is way too small for target practice. Boy, I sound so positive, don't I? :) If you really want a digital frog to invade your Quake2 program, fine by me, but I wouldn't recommend it. Now about that mod I mentioned... Wait, never mind... :D
