LODs for large scale ground textures?

I've been finding it tough to balance details between close up / mid / far away while creating large area ground textures. Something like a desert or grassland. I find that the high frequency details that look nice close up tend to create repetition or even noise further away. I am creating larger scale details too, for that scale, but the details intended for close up still make themselves known. I was thinking that LODs for textures would be nice too, but a search didn't display anything like that. I know LOD models switch to new lower res models, but do they ever switch to different specifically made textures, and not just down-res'd versions?
