I posted a question about this yesterday on the main site. So far no dice.

Is there a way to mask effects and smart masks so they only apply to certain areas? When I drag a smart mask to my layers panel it overrides whatever masks I have in place and applies whatever effect it creates onto everything below the layer. I would love to have this effect only apply to select areas but if I try changing its masking settings it seems to disable the effect. Suggestions?

Here are the examples. Notice how the previous mask on the layer gets overwritten.

I have been tinkering with it a bit more and I found the brush setting (GIF shown below) and I can paint out the effect with the black gradient. So it can be done, but just like all the other times I would rather have a mask and select in what I want then spend the time to cover every inch of my mesh in black paint. So far I havent found a solution for that mask feature :(

Also, unless color select has a setting I haven't learned yet, it only adds to the smart mask. I want to deselect everything but the area I want it to apply to.

I will make a new structure and start over. Perhaps I need to be more liberal with my material assignments. Trial and error.

I have started over again, I created multiple materials in Blender for testing purposes. However, now I think I have created multiple maps. Which unless I'm mistaken, is very inefficient for a game. Below Is a GIF showing all the maps that have been created by the materials. If these are all unique texture maps that would all need to be imported into Unity separately, than I fear this approach is wrong...  Which would mean the earlier approach was correct... even though I'm still not sure how to set up the masks so smart masks dont cover every single object in the texture set.
