My Quest to Get Job Overseas

Hey guys my name is Bryce Szandro I'm currently 18yrs old atm and I am really to trying to get a job in the industry, so I have decided to go and make this thread to show my progression until I reach my goal.

For my first Progress shot, I decided to do a concept by Ken Fairclough,

Yes, I plan on baking and texturing in substance Painter, I am going to make base textures in designer and go on from there. I am still thinking whether I want to do it Marmoset or Unreal, depends on how I feel when I get there.

The main thing for me is that I am having fun with my projects again.

Looks awesome! Do show more...I'm in the exact same position as you, only probably really far behind you at the moment haha! I'm still finishing college, but I hope to be following guides and online resources to be learning more about delving deeper into 3D art & design

goodluck man, in my experience, your high poly needs to be great but they really wanna see the low poly conversion, UV unwrap and texturing. At least for a gaming industry job.

substance painter, UVing at the moment, been doing a lot of overtime at my work at the moment, so I haven't had a chance to break and Texture it, will get to it, as I really want to try Substance Painter MeshID Baking for it.

I have a strong willing to add substance painter to my own pipline, but didnt have a chance yet. I tried once and hve been a little confused. Substance has only 4K resolution per texture set. For a large models and close cameras within 2K per frame renders it could make a pain in the ass) So now i`m using Quixel insted.

I think the reason why is that its catered for game art mostly not really for film, as film guys have mari.

Little update, update, I have managed to get some freelance. I will get you guys some more updates, thanks for the support guys, once this contract is over I will get back on the ball with posting here again.

The high poly looks fine, on the low poly the specular light on the barrel seems a bit odd, but I might be wrong.

Looking great Bryce. The only crit I have is your edge-wear. There a few spots where the texture repeats itself. Right now it's way to uniform.

I see what you mean, I am still trying to get a handle on Texturing and plan on doing a few studies after this, but thanks feedback Aaron, really appreciate it.

You'll get there eventually. Your work is already miles beyond what most people getting out of college are putting out. Just keep making new contacts, networking and trying out new ideas and you'll land something eventually.

@beccatherose's concept, really loved the piece so I wanted to try my hand at doing the asset, this is the highpoly. I hope I did the concept justice and there will definitely be more to come from this one, Crits are always welcome, thanks guys.

Nice job on the axe. I think there's a few things that could be changed to make it look better though.

- First I think the wood is really nice. I like it quite a bit.

- I think the wrap material needs to be better defined. I can't really tell if that's cloth or leather or some other material.
- The chipped up metal with the pattern on it is odd. Where the pattern is carved out it looks like more like brittle rock (rather than being dented it looks too chipped).
- The blade looks a little odd with how different the cleanliness is from the mount. I would suggest that you have the same level of grime and then having it clean where it's been sharpened.
- I think the biggest problem though is the random scratches that don't change in size (having a taper to a scratch is important). Also all the scratches look the same size. I would also say that having the scratches have noticeably less grime in them than the surrounding area could also make them look a lot more interesting.

Only thing with the design I'm wondering is what's the function of the bot? Like I'm trying to think of the practical application of such a design and can't really think of one.

thanks, yeah I have been trying hard, I have relieved some freelance stuff, but nothing permanent so far. All I know is just keep applying to places and make decent Art Eventually something will come along.

I almost had a bite, The biggest issue for me apparently is my location being in Australia and my lack of professional experience other than my small amount of freelance.

You might try seeking out contract positions that allow remote work to be done. It would be like say 6 months of work for a company that's in more of a freelance capacity but at the same time you will get more relevant experience than say doing work for some guy on a forum and you'll have more stuff to add to your portfolio.
