Maya 2016 - Quad draw mesh line rendering issues

There seems to be a bit of a rendering issue involving the Viewport 2.0 rendering of the Overlay Append Mesh lines (though the same effect is present with regular wireframes). Using the legacy renderers seem to have their own bugs like when holding tab to draw a line of quads causes the overlay append mesh lines to vanish making drawing a line of quads quite difficult, and the performance of the viewport is reduced considerably.

Is there a setting in the viewport controls I've overlooked to try and rectify this? I've tried to change the wireframe anti aliasing levels but it doesn't really change the effect zooming into a mesh has on the culling.

I've included screenshots to demonstrate.

Doing retepology is much more difficult with the lines embedded in the live mesh, any help would be welcome.

Edit: this issue doesn't manifest in orthographic mode, but you can't tumble orthographic mode like in 3ds max.]

Edit2: Frozen/xray fixes the issue at the cost of making the mesh semi transparent as expected.
