I remembering seeing a making of video back in the day of Jurassic Park. This is how they would animate the dinosaurs when they transitioned from stop motion to CG. In theory, this is a really great idea.

Needs a stand attached to its back that it can be pivoted on for any pose other than 'standing still and very well balanced'...

This doesn't seem useful for anything more than still poses. A neat gadget, but not really a practical tool.

any experienced animator would be way faster, and way better at posing without using something like this. But I could see it being useful for say character artists who want to pose their stuff after. or using it for reference when drawing. but thats about it

Unfortunately, when dealing with stop motion, this is a step backwards.
It's important that the model is positioned exactly.-A very tough thing to do, even when dealing with an actual doll. The height, body volume, length of spine, arms, proportions are all going to effect the curvatures and silhouettes...

While using a 'vanilla' doll, the animator will likely not be getting an accurate representation of the final model. Dealing with relative offsets, on a rig that doesn't match, will be a nightmare.. not to mention scrubbing through 100's of keyframes then realizing a small adjustment needs to be made on... keyframe 288. Oops. The Qumarion is no longer in the same pose. You'll have to go into the computer and adjust it with the mouse- Which, by the way, is infinitely more precise.

Mind you, to be fair.. The creators intended this tech for other means. "Celsys provides production tools for Illustrations and comics. We expect the software will be used when drawing 2D illustrations, for example. You could give the model a pose with Qumarion, and use this 3d character as a rough design, and draw by tracing over it. That was our initial motivation for developing Qumarion."
