Green Lantern hard surface test ( help appreciated XD )

Hey guys for my uni assignment we have been asked to do something 3D related that we have never done before so for this project im going to look at Hard service sculpting !!

with the new DC game Injustice Gods Among us coming out im loving the re designs of the character such as Batman and Superman so i thought i would give one of the characters (my favourite) Green Lantern ago ,

just a quick mood board so i can get the feel for the character , but before i even touch 3D i want to nail a concept , that's where your help guys would be much appreciated,

here are 8 quick test sculpts so i can block out some kind of armour, now the face etc is to be ignored its just a ZBrush demo soldier. now this project is only a bust so the legs and arms i dont need to worry about

if you guys can let me know your favourites or alternatives i could try or where to find some good hard surface help it would be awesome

in summary my goals

- nail a sweet concept
- recreate it in ZBrush

are you also trying different proportions? cause some are squished and stretched out. Id say go with normal or thinner proportions and number 1 or 8 for suit, 8 being my fav

personally, I like the chest and shoulders of No.3, with the abdomen of No.5

The upside down teardrop of the logo is quite interesting, but the abdomen is hideous!!

Although the abdomen of 5 leaves enough room for the abdominal muscles to show their shape through the armour ridges.

I'd definitely say he needs more grey in all of these. But from purely a shape point of view, I like 8 as well, though the upside-down teardrop shaped logo on 3 is interesting.

quick attempt at taking number 8 further trying to define the shapes abit better so its not so much "mush"

i then looked at the putting that upside down tear drop on some of the other concepts mentioned

i think the new number 9 is now going in the direction i want but as always what you guys think is more important !!!

what you think then guys , of course im going to keep bashing out different shapes but any guidance would be great

I'm no character artist. But what I see in the references that you gathered is that the suit is always showing the muscular structure of Hal Jordan. Or at least emphasizing it. I think originally your number 8 did this very well near the chest, kind of defining the muscles, I think that's why a lot of people jumped at it right away. I'm kinda seeing it get further away from that, but it would, in my opinion, make it that much better if you started with a definition of muscle before moving on to the layers.

Also your mask makes him look sad. lol

That's just me though. Ha ha.

good point mate i dont wont to lose definition !!! , i will look into having panaled armour following his natural anatomy but not so much that he just looks like a metal man , and i will try and make a more happy mask :P much appreciated

looking back at the characters from injustice it is clear to see their armour all highlight their muscle structure so it is important mine does the same !! this is just a quick start on how i hope to achieve this

everything is very rough at the moment but I really wanted to keep that upside down tear-drop , more detailed sketches to come but i think this is more on the right track ! disagree ? let me know

Heya Wolf. I think you need to spend some more time looking at refs and getting those proportions down. That torso is a bit rough at the moment and any armor you'd lay on it would be premature, in my opinion.

in the next iteration i think you should make the lower torso and abdomen a bit larger or the head smaller.
I see how the bigger upper torso make for a "classic" hero style but still the head can't really be as big as his stomach... just my 2 cents

Wow, just can't make up your mind, can you?

Anyway, just keep working on it. I suggest you pull up some photographic reference for the face and body, right now there are a lot of anatomical issues, and I'm especially confused about what's going on on his back. I also think it's a pretty odd choice to have the model cut off in the way you do right now. Are you planning on adding legs?

mate tell me about it !!! it doesnt have legs because its for my uni assignmnent, its a hard surface test and my first concept lacks secondary and tertiary details which are important for hard surface scupting. yeah the face im saving until last because all my marks for the project are gonna come from his armour

the back is just armour mate not anatomy

having some normal map problems, im using my high poly sculpt from zbrush and the low poly from 3ds max using XNormals, it seems the arms are projected onto the side of the mesh and i cant seem to figure out why , any idead ? :S

your projection cage probably clips into the arm. make it smaller.

this is my submission for my hand in , still got alot of things to work on, i want to make it a full body character but i think ill be going back to concept in my spare time with the limitations of uni , thanks everyone for your help with this project its been greatly appreciated
