I hadn't seen this posted here yet, so forgive me if this thread is a duplicate. Just found a neat post on slipgatecentral's livejournal regarding a writeup on a gdc '10 environment art workshop by Anton Lavrushkina. It's in Russian, so use Chrome to do the translating if you don't speak it ^_^.

iam surprised at the translation from google, thought it would be worse
its just a general plan and its explained in details step by step right after that image.
