I basically got sent a scene that built from a bunch of copies.
I'd like to convert to instances. I did some search, but googling "convert object to instance" or anything like that results into "convert instance into object".

So that wasnt really succesfull.

Tried searching for some scripts.. couldnt find one either.

So if you guys know how to do this in Maya or if you guys know a script that can do this.. I want one =P

Thanks

Fatih.

I don't think there's a maya command to directly covert an object into an instance of another. Instances can only be made from duplicating (AFAIK) (edit: or via 'instance' procedure).

A script could be made for this tedious job, though. How many copies do you need replacing?

PS: are the transform handles of the copies similarly positioned as the object you want to instance from?

Maya 2012 has "Modify > Replace Objects" that can do this. Not sure exactly in which Maya Version it was introduced tho.

    Hmm,
    Thanks for the replies guys.

I actually tried that on the scene. There it would not work properly.

Just made a quick little test scene with 4 cubes and a sphere and it works just fine.
No clue whats going on in the scene that got sent over to me.

I'll have to take another look at the scene and see what it does.
