Running UDK from a mapped network drive

I'm trying to use UDK on a mapped network drive (H:\test\UDK mapped to Z:\udk\) and when I try to run the editor from the Z drive - it crashes. When I run it from H drive it works fine. If I run the editor from the H drive, and then try to load one of the test maps from the Z drive - I get a warning for "externally referenced" on a massive list of asasets - when loading the map from the H drive it loads clean and correct first time.

Is this a common issue? Is there a known workaround? I've tried google and forum searching but cant find any info on the issue. Any help would be much appreciated.
The main reason I'm looking into using a network drive is to prevent broken filepaths between different peoples pc's - do I even need to do this or does UDK reference its filepaths from the root UDK folder rather than the drive root?
