Essentially, if you have an HDR probe file, you use HDR Shop to convert it to the cross format, then you use CubeMapGen to save it as a DDS. I've heard you can use CubeMapGen as a plugin within HDR Shop, but I've never been able to get it to work.

I've used HDRShop + CubeMapGen with success, although only for LDR use.

Exactly as I'd do it. Hdr cube's are just the DDS format you save to. I think I pick 16bit float or something, not sure.
Just make sure you mark the "Save MipChain" checkbox in cubemapgen!! Or you won't be able to use them with cubemap blurring in shaders like mine or 3PS.
