Vertex paint Maya 2008

I'm trying to paint some vertex colors in a scene i'm working on, but everytime i lay down a color it only shows up as black or white, i can adjust the color value, but it just seems to ignore my selection and revert back to white or black... any ideas?

edit : choosing to floodfil with the selected color works, just actual painting with a brush doesnt

go to Color/color set editor, delete the color layer and try to paint again.

install the bonus tools and use the vertex color display option for see the colors in the mesh.
