There is something about this forum I really like. All of you guys(and gals) are really talented. There are plenty of talented people on CGTalk too. But I guess what makes me enjoy this site more is the fact that you people are way more critical.
On CGTalk, I can post something and one or two things will usually happen. I will either get praise or no one will say anything, usually the latter (in honesty I have gotten good crits there though, forgive the hyperbole). I haven't posted here yet, but I get the distinct feeling that if I did, I'd get really decent criticism.
It's actually kinda scary... I haven't gotten serious crits in a while. You guys sometimes go as far as to tell new people to post in the WAYWO thread if they aren't up to snuff. That's scary too. It discourages me from posting wips here until I have a really good and well thought out idea.
And I like that! This is like the ConceptArt.org of the 3D art world.

There's a reason I'm over here (most of the time) in spite of being a 2D artist. I used to want to be a 3D artist, found this place when I was 14 and did my first (incredibly clueless) model in Wings 3D. I've moved almost exclusively to 2D now...but this place just feels so much like it's all about the art, it's very motivating and relaxing.
Seriously, though, CGTalk is practically useless for valuable critiques, especially for game art. Either your work is incredible and you get pages and pages of gushing ZOMG! replies, or nobody replies. Not to mention the amount of bitterness and venom there is towards newcomers over there.
Don't be put off posting work - people always say the crits are brutal here, but that's because they've been spoiled by sugary bullshit everywhere else. That's not to say that you won't get positive, encouraging feedback here, too - far from it - but you won't get pats on the back by following tutorials, that's for sure.

I don't know if you'd find this odd, but when I post a wip update on CGTalk, one of the things I try to do is find the thread with the least comments (there's more than a few that receive zero), and leave a crit. It's actually really easy to do - I think critting bad work is a lot easier than critting really really good work.
I mean... when you leave praise for someone on their thread, you're joining the crowd and not contributing to anything useful. I like being useful - so there's really no drive for me to leave a comment gushing with praise just like everybody else. Meanwhile my own threads receive maybe one comment every three updates - and they're usually useless.
Everybody likes praise. I like it too. But that's not why I post threads. If I want praise, I've got my own website, and I've got a Deviant Art account. It's nice to know people like your work. It's nicer to know when something is wrong with it.
This stuff is really complicated. We need all the help we can get. We need to be great artists, and we need to be great problem solvers to do our job well. No school is going to teach you how to be either of those - but if you have the drive, and the willingness to take instruction from people in the industry, you can do it.
And shotgun, that's gotta be photoshopped! xD It's awesome either way.
Sorry, back to the point! Well, I guess that is the point? Not only do you get great advice and critiques, Polycounters never cease to find the most ridiculous images to sneak into a thread at the most opportune moment!

Yeah it was so long ago I forgot if its Moose or Moosey_G, only lasted a weekend, but oh what a weekend.
