This game is awesome. It combines the best aspects of old school platforming and exploration with more current text based rouge-likes. It's procedurally generated giving you a new experience every time. It's extremely hard, extremely easy to play for a bit and then put aside and then play a bit more, and it's free (for now). I loooovvveess it.

Been playing this on and off for a couple of months now. It's very fun and random.

It's also really hard, or at least my platforming skills have deteriorated very far from what they once were back in the 8-bit era.

It's a platformer roguelike. Bitesized, improvisational gameplay based around randomly generated dungeons. Everyone play it. And plug in a gamepad.

I kinda gave up on it after I finally managed to find my way to the ice caves and the Tunnel Man didn't appear at the beginning, the lazy bum. I probably should give it another shot I suppose.

I have something like 350 playthroughs, reached the boss 3-4 times and never won.

each zone is four levels, right? end of zone 4 if i recall correctly. If you're out of the ice caves, you're close.

Also, dont worry about the tunnel man. Its nice to have shortcuts for practice/to check things, but game winning runs are going to come from starting at 1-1. It get easier to run though as you get a catalog of tactics and tricks.

I've been playing this too. 250 deaths so far and I can only just get to the first ice level (level 8 I think?). Frustrating but fun.

There's just something about platformers that take place in subterranean worlds that just is always awesome. Blaster Master, Cave Story, Spelunky, etc. If you've never played it, find a copy of Spelunker from Broderbund Software on the NES. Now that is a difficult game to master. I figure it had something to do with the inspiration to make Spelunky. I do believe as well that a developer for Hudson is currently working on a PS3 Reboot of Spelunker. I had seen screen shots once before...maybe in an issue of Famitsu Weekly. This game is charming and addictive. The reboot Blaster Master on Wii ware is worth a play thru as well. I know it's not underground but damn it when is Fez gonna come out finally? Fun fun.

Towerclimb was inspired by Spelunky; I found equally charming.
If you are a Spelunky junkie, you should try it! My record is 1547 ft.

Aditionally, once you learn how two use items safely/effectively you aren't really going to get hit in the first two zones unless you fuck up.

Just keep playing! The fun of spelunky is learning.

Yea, the items are crazy. I got the teleporter once and it was fucking awesome until I teleported into a spider's face.

Just gave this a go, holy moly is it addictive. Finally got a good enough run to buy all kinds of cool crap and before i could even try it out i got cocky and jumped directly onto some spikes. Good times

Good solid gameplay + long lasting randomized items = awesomeness.

completed everything in spelunky.

The shortcut guy is quite a bit more useful. Although the newest releases made it so you can't jump with him when attacking. I've just not updated to any newer versions because of it.

Completed over 50 times now. teleport I never found useful. jetpack and shotgun are useful as well as sacrificing the girl and other creatures for the skull item (collect blood for health points)

Is there a way to soft-throw bombs? I failed the tutorial twice because of this!

This reminds me of a really old shareware game I had back in the early 90's. It was a Indiana Jones rip off and had a lot of ladder climbing, ducking and dodging blow darts along with a bunch of block puzzles... man I loved that game. Gotta remember its name and see if I can find it... or just play this...
