Max render to texture problem

Hey guys I am trying to render a custom mental ray fast sss material to a texture map, is it possible? I have been able to render a regular standard material with a diffuse and whatnot applied to it. But when I moved on to trying the mental ray skin shader material it renders out the image and I can see a flattened version of my character all layed out on the uvs in the preview window(which i know is false) but the final image is just black. Now I wouldnt mind actually using the image that renders in the preview window but the problem with that is there is no edge bleed for some reason so it leaves small seams. I have tried rendering to diffuse maps with lights and shadows both on and off, and complete maps. I have tried changing the render settings in the render to texture window to mental ray setups, still no luck. If there is some setting I am missing or if this just wont work please let me know.
