Registering your own domain, where to go?

Hey folks,

I'm looking for advice on where to go and register my own domain and get setup with non commercial web space to make my own page again.

It just doesn't feel comfortable to me anymore to keep taking Polycount's free but banner laden space, feels like it would be better given
over to those who are more involved in the community than I am these days.

So any tips on where to go and what to get, what to expect, how much to pay, pros and cons in general would be good.
I'm looking merely for someplace to pimp my work again.

r.

Hey good sir. I use dreamhost and set up a huge discount for polycounters. A few guys have already signed up. Great bandwidth, no ads on site and great support.

    Here is the info...

I setup a special discount / promo code at Dreamhost just for polycounters. It will save you over 82 bucks off the L1 (yearly) hosting plan.

This is for the same package I have. L1 which is 1 year of service, hosting, email, ftp, the works. I have the setup fee waived as well for ya. My total disk usage available for me is like 227 gigs. You get added space and bandwidth every month. It is insane. You get like 16 gigs of bandwidth added every week.

    So here is the info.

    Go to http://www.dreamhost.com

    Your promo code is POLYCOUNTERS

Select the L1 (yearly) web hosting option. Using this code will knock the setup fee off the top and the cost will go from $ 119.40 all the way down to $ 37.40. Yeah thats right I just saved you $82.00

    Hope it works for ya.

    The old thread is here.

Although you don't need anywhere near the bandwidth or space provided by Dreamhost, I use them and I would recommend it to anyone. Awesome support and tons of features. If you're looking to spend less though, you can definitely find cheaper (it goes up to $10 a month after the first year).

first of all, why not pimp here in good old polycount?
there's your chance to get involved again with the "young folks" laugh.gif

personally, i dont see why pay for something you can get for free?
i mean sure, a banner, so what? you usually design your website nice so i dont think anyone's gonna mind. well, unless u just *really* wonna make it nice.

besides, i know as long as im on gamespy i can safely continue to upload porn and warez cuz they never check.

I've been using http://www.joker.com/ for about 10 years.

for hosting, I've been using http://www.misanthrope.nu/ for about 3 or 4 years. They just remodeled the site, could probably get you a discount or something http://huevia.com/

It's really two things you are after - a web host, and a domain name. Most companies provide both.

For RSART, I'm actually with a separate one for each.

My domain name rsart.co.uk is now handled by 1&1. I pay them £12 every 2 years, so thats about $12 per year.

My space is provided by Addaction.net for $6.95 per month. For that I get unlimited email accounts, I *THINK* 1 GB of storage space, I *THINK* 20GB monthly bandwidth, and I also get 10 subdomains (I can run 10 other sites from the same serve, but you have register a domain for each of them).

Pros and cons? I can't thinnk of any cons - you get a big chuck of space, mostly likey a control panel, and shit loads of plugins. In my control panel I can set up ftp servers, eamil accounts and quotas, 1 click can turn on a messageboard or a shopping cart. With full server access you can install you own perl stuff like messageboards, interface with the SQL databases, install a content management system....

I downloaded and installed Wordpress for rsart, then hacked the template until I was happy with it. This gives be a webform for adding/editing content, managing comments and links and loads of other cool stuff.

www.bluehost.com free domain registration if you sign up afiak, 300 gigs of space, and 3,000 gigs of transfer per month. Blow's rick's crappy host out of the water. We also used to host our company's site and the games site on 1&1 and it was a major shitfest to use for things like forwarding multiple email address's. Same $6.95 price rick is paying too.

I use Bluehost and aside from a couple of hours of site downtime last year due to major power outages in their area it's been great. Has pretty much everything I'd ever need from a site host.

I'm another user of Bluehost. Absolutely great. Their tech support has been top-notch as well. I wouldn't want to use any other host.

It also looks like if you sign up with bluehost right now you get

    $50 Free Yahoo Credits
    $50 Free Google Credits

certainly not a bad bonus towards the package smile.gif

Thanks for the input folks, I think I'm going to go with Bluehost as it's cheaper and has a lot more info up front
so its easy to get a good impression.

Shotgun: I appreciate the sentiment; think I just want my own space for the sake of it being a fresh start.

If you decide to go with Dreamhost, you won't be sorry. I host all my personal stuff, along with a lot of different clients on my one shared hosting account, and I have had maybe 3 hours of downtime in 2 years and it happened all in one day. It was right after I had sent my portfolio to a bunch of people, so I told them I needed it up quick, and they put it on another server for me so that it could be up ASAP.

I have unlimited SQL databases, emails, etc, 270gb of space, and 5tb of bandwidth. Insane for $9USD a month (and only like $10 for the entire first year).
