External World rig rendering issue in Maya

I found these rigs called "External World character rigs" - https://davidoreilly.itch.io/external-world-characters

When I go to render the rig the texture does not show up. It renders just with a normal Lambert, but in the Maya view port all the rigs have the textures applied.
 
Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this?

I saw an early post on this issue and it was solved with a Mental Ray Vertex Color node in the hyper shade. Only problem with that is Mental Ray is no longer in Maya.

Any kind of help would be much appreciated.
