Custom Script Maya help - Mel/Python

I'm increasingly finding situations where it would be benefitical to pick up mel or python. I need some help with something, and hopefully I can study it.
I have a few hundred objects correctly named in Maya. I need them all to have their own duplicant of the shader network, with with a name that matches the object's. An added suffix of _SHDR.

On an instance by instance basis, I guess it would look something like list objects, select object, duplicate shader, rename new shader based on object name + suffix, select object, assign shader.

Any help would be helpful! Else I'm doing this by hand >< Thanks!
