How to prepare models for Bevel & FWN?

While I had some experience on using FWN. I haven't seen a good guide that explain generally what sort of checks you should perform on the models, before you bevel and apply FWN (usually through a script).

Can people with experience summarise a few rules of thumb? Or is it always a manual tuning process?

Aside: I am also interested in knowing how people create LOD (and UV) for these models... I came across this thread, many mentioned you need to pre-plan, but I don't know what to pre-plan for.

    In which software?
If its in blender, I just use hardops plugin and set the segments to 1. Then I use YAVNE in those bevels.

I haven't worked in Blender before, but I hope my question is tool agnostic?

But for an example: if you try to bevel edges with high valence vertex, you can't use the fractional offset mode in Maya, and the absolute offset mode will result in flipped faces.
