Edit: Newest...
Unless there's any substancial critique, I'm calling this done :)

For this one I leaned heavily on booleans and modifier stacks, making it much quicker and easier to decide upon how many sides I wanted on my lowpoly, and to get a solid base for the subdivision.

I introduced myself to toolbag baker which also saved me a lot of time both for the baking and texturing setup.
@EarthQuake if you're reading this, it would be very helpful if the color values in the baked material were exported as color-fill layers to PSD if there's no textures is present in the materials applied to the HP. Both for the ease of editing those values and for a more manageable file-size.

Total time: 13,5 hours.
Highpoly: 6 hours. Planning better would shave off an hour.
Lowpoly: 1,5 hours. Good planning made the UVs only take 29 minutes.
Texturing: 5 hours. Made some mistakes early on which affected all my materials. Spent too much time nitpicking still.
Scene setup, and goofing around: Probably 3 hours. Didn't count those :P

Software used: 3ds Max, Toolbag, Photoshop.

Next time I'll try my hand at a concept rifle, and will be trying out Substance.

OP:
I decided on a smaller asset this time to test out a new workflow in max, and I had wanted to try out the Toolbag baker. 7k tris, bake is done, more optimization to come.

TL;DR
The new workflow is meant to do away with as much manual labour as possible, leaning heavily on modifier stacks inspired by random posts by Mr. Bolton and Perna, making me at least twice as fast as before. Thanks guys!
The stack is such that I can now go back and change the body's sides from 36 to 24 or 12, with instant results except for the UVs.
Toolbag baker is strong as all hell. Watching the 'getting to know toolbag' series made it seem so simple that I thought it was a lie. It wasn't.
The model sits at 7k tris, but I'm not done optimizing. I've deliberately done the baking process before finishing so I can experience going back and forth between Max and Toolbag. Hopefully I'll have a revelation on how I can better set up my model as it's pretty much touch-and-go ATM.
There's also a Viewer link ( http://skins.thanez.net/m84/marmo/ ) for anyone interested.
