Animating A Ship with Moveable Parts

Hi All,

I have a question on how the ships are animated in Star Citizen. I'm working on a similar ship model and want to see how star citizen does its animations.

Are the parts that move their own separate meshes with their own UV's and textures? Is the ship broken up into parts that move? Because I'm trying to figure out how to animate a ship where the landing gear is pulled up during take off, then its hidden in flight, but there is also an option to extend out some thrusters. I don't think it would be a good idea to animate all the various combinations when it would be much similar to have them as separate meshes that do their own thing. Of course then I would need to create additional UV's and textures for the separate parts instead of sharing one texture set.
