Mobile Cross Platform Capabilities

A friend and I are looking at making a game that we would like to launch cross platform on mobile devices. We've found the google play services but those seem to have been abandoned recently. Is there another solution for us to allow players on different platforms play together?

My google searches keep pointing back to older google play articles.

It really depends on what you're trying to accomplish with the cross platform implementation. If you're using a library like photon for realtime interaction then everything should be good to go out of the box, you just need to have two different builds with each one being tailored to the specifics of each platform. If you're looking to share stat tracking or leaderboards then you might want to use something like unity analytics

We just want to make sure everyone that wants to play together, can do so.

Its a turn based multiplayer thing. Would having a server set up get us around the problem? meaning if the games from either type of device sent and received info from a server somewhere, would there be any roadblocks?
