(MAYA) Selection issue with near objects

I am having an issue with maya that when my persp camera is placed near an object it cannot select that object and instead selects an object behind it. It works however if there are no other objects behind it. This is a problem though when working on small detail meshes. The problem is resolved when I enable camera based selection but Id rather not have to use that setting.

    This is a super annoying problem. Other ways you can get around it is by freezing transforms, which also sucks. Changing to DirectX or OpenGL may help, or trying a newer or older video card driver.

    I mostly get this on large scenes where I have large transform values, what I usually do is a small box select around a vertex that hopefully doesn't have a vert or edge from another object along the view ray. Even if I do pick up another model, it's a small but stupid step to deselect the others.

    I tried your method but unfortunately it didnt seem to have much of an affect. Right now im being forced to turn on autocamera based selection at close range.
