max2017 unwrap uvw issues / questions

Upgraded from 13 to 17 and been bumping into some very annoying changes i want to be able to change back
the display selected polygons filter button is hiding the polies in the view port as well, how do you line up a seam if you cant see the fucking model
I want it like the previous versions, the veiwport untouched
the freeform gizmo. You have to click the handle or one of the vertices selected, before you could just click anywhere inside the selection area and move the selection around then
