Modo 10.2v1 - bump & normal map bakes full white

I am having issues baking bump and normal maps on a material...

I am following the same procedure each time, create new image, set file name, change map type to either bump/normal, and i make sure that the node is the top most layer of my material. Then I right click > bake from Object to Texture, and the texture comes out full white. I don't understand what is going on. Any suggestions?
