Question about Substance - Steam version

Hey there!
I am thinking about buying Substance via Steam and was wondering if there are any known downsides about buying tools on Steam?

Is Steam in this scenario just the licence dealer? Can I just activate my trial version, with the key given by steam? Or do I need to use steam to launch Substance?

Are there known problems with upgrading to newer versions?

you can create an account, and then from allegorithmic website, connect to your steam account, so it checks which allegorithmic's product your own,
then you can download the regular version and activate it has anyone who hasn't purchase from Steam.

I'd recommend buying the software from their website and ask for a steam key by contacting support. If you buy it on Steam and end up not liking it (since you will require to run it through Steam) you can always keep to the "retail" version. 

Personally, I always have Steam running so it's been no problem. Plus, it's nice to keep track of my hours.

Steam uses the hell out of my gpu when its running on my laptop so i like to keep it disabled.
