anyone know why the texture goes dark when i go into viewport canvas tool to paint on the model?

zero experience with viewport canvas but are there perhaps vertex colors on the model that get multiplied over your texture? as in - does viewport canvas somehow trigger a different shading mode? i have seen other parts of max do this.
object properties -> general -> display properties: look for a check mark next to an option called 'vertex channel display' and turn it off.

well it appears that when i reload the texture within the viewport canvas it came in how it was suppose to be.

Good old viewport canvas! Introduced as a potentially great feature and left to fester in Max purgatory..... Bug could've been gamma related.
