HTPC software help

My PS3 died a few weeks back and I've always had the urge to build a mini-itx computer for about 14 years so I made the leap and built a mini-itx Home Theater PC.
I got Kodi (formerly XBMC) set up on it expecting to have something comparable to a console's streaming experience but with the added bonus of ripping my dvd library, playing steam games, etc.. only to find out Amazon Prime, Hulu & Netflix support is a bit hacked into Kodi and the whole interface is a more arcane than I expected.
Anyone here have experience setting up a home theater PC that the whole family can use? Is Windows Media Center the answer or did I just spend a lot of money on a tiny PC?
