I am trying to use sweep to make some cables for my model.

I have the shape and line set up, but when I do the modifier it ends up like this:

It is a lot larger than the original shape I picked

It also had wierd pinching errors:

the original line and shape:

Not knowing the application specifics, but don't profile curves usually have to sit flush at one end of the path curve ? It looks like yours are slightly offset.

Just a shot in the dark anyway.

Usually when you get pinching there are two points that are close together. Try building your curves with less corner verts or smooth points and use more handles.

Select a vert, right click and set it to Bezier.
If the handle won't move along the axis you want, mouse over the move gizmo and click the axis you want to move it on, this will set the handle to move along that axis.
If you need a smoother curve, adjust the Interpolation steps.

But really there are some shapes that won't be able to go around sharp corners, their diameter is just too wide.

To me it looks like you need to reset the xforms of the both the purple and blue splines before doing the modifier.
