Using HDR cubemap in Maya?

Maya 2013 is giving me an error when I try to load a HDR cube map saved as .dds float32 RGBA.
Googling found some info on the Maya 2014 docs that seems to hint that 16 or 32 bit array(like a cubemap) textures are not supported.
Surly I'm crazy and am just missing something?
