Anyone have ideas on how to replicate this style of wireframe in either MAX or Unity?

The site it's from was calling it Ruled XY wireframe, you notice the Z is missing.

I've tried mapping a straight line to each face and that sort of works if there isn't a lot of distortion. Once the poly becomes stretch, the texture gets a kink, not a great look. I'd rather use the edge of the wireframe.

Any ideas for either MAX or Unity?
