Qualifications:
SENIOR CONCEPT ARITST

The Army Game Studio is looking for a passionate, motivated, and experienced Senior Concept Artist.

The ideal candidate will have experience in concept drawing and illustrating a diverse visual range of environments, objects, vehicles, weapons, architecture and characters. A visceral understanding of form, structure, color, and light and a creative imagination is essential. The ideal candidate should also have a good understanding of game art creation.

A Senior Concept Artist is responsible for effectively visually communicating product vision to varied audiences. This artist will work closely with the Art Directors and Leads in order to assist in the development of the project and as an advocate for the art quality of the game by creating sketches and digital paintings of characters, props, vehicles, and environments.

The Artist may also be utilized to help define the artistic vision for HUD/UI, websites, and/or marketing materials. The Senior Concept Artist will have reference gathering and data/image organizational skills.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Major
- Help define and create visual style guides with the project art director
- Create concepts that are able to be implemented in a real time game engine
- Ability to design components that visually relate to and support a larger aesthetic
- Help resolve a range of complex artistic development issues for artists as well as other team members
- Help maintain the artistic goals and vision through all phases of the game development cycle from pre-production through final product release
- Help ensure that art assets uphold the integrity of the game’s design and the artistic vision
- Effectively collaborate and communicate with the production artists executing the concepts
- Communicate with production artists to help clarify concepts in order to achieve milestone objectives

Additional
- Create fully realized inspirational paintings for the team and marketing
- Create environment studies, mood pieces, color storyboards, compositional layouts, paint-overs, etc
- Create vehicle concepts and modeling guide orthographic drawings
- Create character concept sketches (including costume design)
- Detailed drawings of weapons, sensors, etc
- Sketches of props and individual environmental elements (entourage)
- Rapidly express vision in both detailed line art break-outs as well as speed-painted color imagery
- Accurately provide time estimates and adhere to them

QUALIFICATIONS

Required Skills:
- 5+ years working as a Concept Artist within the video game and/or film industry
- Must have excellence with Photoshop (advanced skills in Painter, Sketchbook, or similar a plus)
- Outstanding environment and character concept art skills with an eye for perspective, color, lighting, and atmosphere
- Solid foundation in traditional art, such as figure drawing, industrial design, landscape painting, and illustration.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills
- Ability to work well under pressure and deadlines
- Creative problem solver, able to drive communication through visuals
- Experience with rapid-iteration of drawings and paintings suggesting atmosphere, lighting and form
- Experience working in a wide variety of styles
- Demonstrate a strong understanding of composition, form, lighting, and color
- Demonstrate a strong understanding of anatomy pertaining to humans (animals a plus)
- Solid understanding of art/animation pipelines
- Excellent writing skills; ability to clearly and concisely communicate through documented style guides
- Able to work well autonomously and with a group to meet deadlines, prioritize and tackle multiple tasks, and complete deliverables with a high quality standard

Desired
- Familiarity with video game product development including, but not limited to workflow, tools, limits of technology
- Matte painting, color keys, character turnarounds, story board, marketing material, graphic design, HUD/UI design experience desirable
- Solid organization skills with adherence to file structures, naming conventions and other established protocols
- Understanding of modern real-time 3D engines
- Ability and strong desire to actively contribute to a collaborative team environment
- Positive, professional attitude and interpersonal skills

Desired Skills:
- BA in Industrial Design, Illustration, or related field or equivalent experience
- Passionate about video games
- Understanding of architecture, mechanics, and carpentry (how things are built)
- Previous game development a plus
- Experience with industry standard 3-D package (Maya, Max, SoftImage) is a plus
- Storyboarding abilities a plus
- Passion for playing and creating games and can articulate that passion clearly and analytically
