Hello Polycount, this will be the place where i post my progress.

Also started this scene based on the concept from razorb. (edit: will never be finished).

Experimenting with textures, and marmoset. Amazed by what it does.
Not sure how to handle stone and wood specular though.

I'd like to see peoples opinions on the wall. Is the normal mapping on that to intense? Just curious on how people look at normal mapping (less is more kinda thing?).

Its good you say that because i was afraid it was too much, i tried to keep that in mind because i have a habbit of exaggerating. I see others do it more subtle. It wouldn't surprise me if its still too much.

Haftoof i went into your thread and i might overlay a flat normal map color (128, 128, 255). Like someone mentioned there.

Well I have no clue, I'm looking as much for feed back as you are, I think the more "intense" it is, the less real it looks. If real is what you are going for.

Did some work on the character. I got a bit more specific and choose arnold schwarzenegger as my main ref, and want to have a diablo 3 type barbarian in the end. Not sure if i will design my own armor or take it directly from a concept. Worked mainly on the upper body. I think the shoulder muscle is too wide from the sideview. Pose should be improved, especially on the legs.

the abdominal muscles look a bit weird, u may want to fix them. also fingers have some strange silhuotte

I think the abdominals are better now still not as good as i want it to be, It looks a bit flat from some angles and i think thats not right. I tried to make him more realistic, toning things down and adjusting the pose. I think the forearm might be a bit too long. I need to get good ref for the back of the knee, continue on the face, hands and feet but i need more poly's in those areas.

Making slow but good progress, added toes and reprojected everything. Pushed the face and hands a bit more also. Plan to bend the fingers more.

The upper legs and some parts in the 45 degree front view are killing me ( arch in the back for instance).

Nice blockout for the armor the only thing that I don't get is that short sword on his back ^^' I'd see better a big ass sword or if you wanna keep it that way maybe two would be better. A single sword that size doesn't fit well in that position imo.

Thanks, i was also thinking about removing/changing it, to a more leaner and longer style i will take a look at that right away.

Its been a while since last update, I am moving on to retopo now. Missing some rings, studs and medaillons that hide messy parts.

Wow. Very impressive work. It was interesting seeing your progress! The feet do look a bit bare, in comparison to the rest of the character. Maybe give him some sandals or something?

Thanks for the replies guys, i struggled quite a bit with this character and learned a ton. And unfortunately i have almost no time left to finish it, motivation has been going on and of as well. there is a lot of things that could have been better in the design, from the start it should have had a clearer direction and not be a mix of roman and viking influences, this has led to a character that feels too bare for a viking but is also not a believable roman/gladiator. He should have sandals or boots/proper pants, some fur, typical viking hair and the hands need some attention. i think that is work worth looking at for after the deadline.

Its been way too long since i touched this character, but i am back into it and trying to finish up the low poly.

Just a sidenote, I noticed there's a lot of shadow information in that brick texture. Generally you'd want to avoid that. Read pages 52-61 here:

@ Brygelsmack : Yeah that is one of my weak sides, i have a tendency to put too much shadow in my textures. I will try to pay attention to it on the next tiling texture's. Thanks man!>

Thanks guys, Yes a different pose is definately nicer. I do have to mention that the design is mostly not my own. Its for a school project and it had to be based upon reference, so i tried to combine several references to create a somewhat unique thing. Which wasn't the greatest decision. Better to stick to one really strong concept or design it completely from scratch with a clear story in mind.

I came across this overpaint by artquest, i liked it so much that i had to try it. Didn't nail the character it has in the concept, should have made the jaw longer to make the upper skull smaller. But the result is better than what i expected.

This one started out as a Darksiders monster tribute. I Spent a bit more time on the renders in Photoshop, and learned quite a bit. I Noticed in this and the last work that i have some trouble finding the best angle to render from.
Tried to paint in some highlights but feel unsure about how to progress it further. I might look into making a more finished product sometime. Using some photo textures maybe for things like the skin and horns for example.

Head pratice from sphere, not much reference used except for the ears. Could use another pass because it doesn't feel right yet.
