Wood texture practice

Hi All,

I'm new here and new to hand painted textures (this would literally be my 3rd HP texture) and followed Sectaurs paintover to try my hand at this wood thingy. What do you think?

I think it looks quite nice.
I would say that the cut on the second plank is too unique and would stick out like a sore thumb when tiled (it's slightly too dark too). There seems to be some sort of inner shadow on the whole of the texture, which depending on what this is used for, would affect the tiling too.

Depending on the use, you should probably shift the planks vertically so they form a more natural tileable texture for floors/walls.

I really like the shaded version but of coarse it wouldn't work tiling. I think it'd totally benefit from DWalker's suggestion, just offset the image halfway vertically and manipulate the placement of the seams of the planks, avoid having them all along the same vertical line. Other then that I think you're getting a good idea at how to tackle something like this stylistically. The flow of the wood reads well.

Thanks guys, it's actually going in a door panel so doesn't need to be offset but I will keep that in mind if I would like to reuse it for floors. It's the style.. doesn't it feel a bit heavy and chunky although not intended? I tend to do that when sculpting.

Oh I see now! If it's not going to be tiled then maybe it would look better with the shading. XD I think the chunkiness of it really adds to the style.
