3d Shadows on a @d background (MAYA)

Hi guys, I have an incredibly noob question to ask, basically I have an image of buildings and I want to fly something over them. To sell the shot I want to project a shadow onto the 2d background.

I want to do it like this http://youtu.be/NZZvtQtdbzM?t=37s with a different angle though.

I think it has to do with projection mapping the still onto geometry but I can't seem to line it up right as I have to animate a ship flying past.

This is just a very quick rushed job (Don't judge me ) of the type of shot where the shadows need to be used.

You need to create a matte pass. Create rough 3D models of the buildings, then render them only as white with black shadows cast from the ships. Use this as a layer in your compositing software, under the ships but above the building photo.
