Fan art and working from others´ concepts

Hello.

There´s something I´d love to get some information from people working in the industry, building portfolios and everybody who knows about this topic.

It´s about fan art and replicas of existing stuff. I am not talking about M4 rifles or Ferrari cars, but stuff like unique guns from games- assets that relate to the game. For example, the Halo battle rifle, Brink guns or ... well, you get the idea.

Is it generally ok to rebuild them for private portfolio purpose? Or is it not appropriate to create stuff from companies concepts?

Are there some DOs and DONTs when creating fan art?

Its totally ok to use others concept art as long as you give credit.
If its a individuals say off Deviant Art etc always try and ask permission. If its not possible as long as you don't claim that you did the concept art it'll be fine.
If you do use art from a company again just make sure you state that its fan art .
